Green Roofs bring together technology from the 21st century with that of 1000 years ago. The Vikings had turfed roofs and the use of green roofs has become very popular across Europe. The concept is to use the roof space to provide a "living" roof planted with attractive and robust plants. As well as providing aesthetic appeal the roofs cut down on heat loss during the winter and heat build-up in the summer months. They also are environmentally friendly, helping to absorb CO2.
Extensive green roofs have a layer of low-maintenance, frost and drought resistant sedum which enhances the look of a building.
These shallow planted areas are ideal for lightweight structures and even pitched roofs. Intensive green roofs are planted with a range of greenery from turf to shrubs and trees. The area can also incorporate hard landscaping and be used for public access and recreation. These intensive systems can be incorporated on roof structures with the necessary capability to handle the weight, and other features such as irrigation systems.
